Digital accessibility regulations: are you ready?

If your organisation’s website was built more than two years ago, there is less than a month to go until it must meet the new digital accessibility regulations.

The regulations, which came into effect in September 2018, place additional responsibilities on public sector organisations to ensure their digital output is accessible to everyone.

Accessibility means more than putting things online. It means making your content and design clear and simple enough so that most people can use it without needing to adapt it, while supporting those who do need to adapt things.

People may not have a choice when using a public sector website or mobile app, so it’s important they work for everyone. The people who need them the most are often the people who find them hardest to use.

There are additional benefits, too. Accessible websites usually work better for everyone. They are often faster, easier to use and appear higher in search engine rankings.

To help you understand your responsibilities, we have compiled a list of useful reading. We’d love to hear about the work you’ve been undertaking to ensure your content is accessible to everyone – email online@lgcomms.org.uk
