News and views – what’s your story?

By Alix Macfarlane, Vice Chair LGcomms and Programme Director Communications & Engagement Slough Borough Council

Communications professionals are often surprising quiet about their own achievements. We regularly see communications teams use their skills to promote others while humbly shying away from talking about the great things going on in our sector.

We’re asking you to step into the spotlight briefly to blog with us about your ideas, learning and successes. We will share your news with all our members through our online blog section (on our website under the latest tab).

Throughout the year we publish a range of excellent stories to inspire, motivate and capture the imaginations of colleagues from far and wide. So far in 2025, we’ve published blogs about changes to local government, the popular Zero to Hero lunch and learn series, insights from senior communicators, school attendance, social media, and Ramadan, to name a few.

At LGcomms, our mission is to raise the standard of communications in the public sector. As with so much in life, this is best done working together and sharing ideas to increase understanding for all.

LGcomms has more than 200 member organisations across the UK with a huge amount of knowledge to share. Anyone in our membership is welcome to contribute to the LGcomms blog section, and we welcome guest blogs too. You may recognise some recent blog authors as members of the LGcomms executive committee, LGcomms Future Leaders (and former Future Leaders!) and speakers from our events. You could be next. So, what would you like to talk about today? Send us your blog to hello@lgcomms.org, or if you have an idea you’d like to talk about email us and one of the team will be in touch.

A few tips if you are new to blogging:

· Aim for about 500 words

· You can write about any subject you feel our members will be interested in

· Have a look at blogs that appeal to you for hints on formats that work for your own piece

· Make sure you have any approvals required if including content about specific people, events, businesses or organisations

· Remember to include your name, job title and organisation

· Provide a landscape image you have permission to use to accompany your text (we can help with images if you don’t have one to suit your story)
