In the last few weeks I’ve heard two heads of comms separately refer to their comms teams as ‘a cynical bunch’. And it’s no surprise, when comms officers are often the first port of call for anonymous ‘residents’ spouting vitriol on social media, and critical journalists who definitely know how to do our jobs better than us.
But I don’t think we’re cynics at heart. I don’t think anyone goes into public sector communications without a genuinely positive belief they can make a difference. And when you get a bunch of us in a room: the passion; the commitment; the excitement about learning how to be even better – well it’s palpable.
That’s why it has been a complete privilege to lead the planning for LGcomms Academy this year. For the last 6 months I have spent many happy moments with brilliant people – peers and colleagues from across the country – who have channelled their passion and commitment into developing the best possible programme for you, our members.
To say I’m excited about what we’ve lined up for you in Wigan on 10th and 11th of October is an understatement. We’ve included inspirational speakers, a bit of self care, plenty of networking opportunities, but above all a chance to learn from each other.
That’s what our LGcomms community is about. We don’t have big comms budgets but we have incredible skills across our sector, and a desire to share – to benefit local communities up and down the country.
I really hope you will join us in Wigan next month. I promise a warm welcome, and all the passion you will ever find in one place. There’s no better antidote to cynicism.
