IBM’s old advertising slogan used to be ‘the power of the network’.
These days they are still big on the networking element, but, since the advent of the cloud, its more about connectivity and apps than raw computing server power.
That said, the power of networks is as compelling as ever. That’s why LGcomms, over the past year or so, has been focussing on developing regional and national networks. There are now networks in the East of England, East Midlands, the North East, South West, and we contribute to the Scottish and Welsh national sessions. Two new networks are on the cards in the north of England.
A simple diagram I stole from LinkedIn tells us why this is important, although I’m way too self-effacing to claim what we do might lead to lifelong connections. But they certainly lead to more local, professional ones.
From and LGcomms point of view, in terms of our membership offer, there’s even more point and purpose to the regional networks. Top of the list is influence, and the chance via the networks to get regional issues or asks onto the national agenda, via our in person and online events programme, or a slot at Academy. Membership organisations need to listen well to members. So the networks are a great way of tuning in. My favourite agenda item at a recent networks was ‘what’s keeping you awake at night?’
In times of change and upheaval – and with so much of our membership involved in the early stages of Devolution and local government reorganisation – the opportunity to share experiences, and learn from others is invaluable.
Also high on the list is – LGcomms not doing too much. These are your networks so how they work, where and how they are held, and the agendas they explore are very much in your hands. We’re here to facilitate, add value, bring SMEs in, and support with publicity and admin. But it’s your show. It’s also important not to cut-across existing networks, which often exist within county or metropolitan areas. We try and expand horizons and work on a slighter larger geographical template if we can.
Having introduced the networks, the ambition is to try and get as much of England covered as we can by them. If you think this is something your part of the country could benefit from, drop us a line @hello@lgcomms.org.uk and let us know. We’d love to help you get your network up and running.
