Tackling inequality in public sector comms

The biggest ever survey of local public service communication teams has been launched by LGcomms in a bid to better understand diversity within the industry.

The survey is first ever of its kind to explore equality, diversity and inclusion among local public service communications professionals, which is key to future improvements.

Survey responses will be used to build an understanding of current diversity in the profession and inform the design of initiatives and resources to reduce discrimination, improve equality of opportunity and celebrate diversity in the sector.

In 2020, LGcomms introduced a diversity and inclusion mission statement along with actions to tackle inequality. This survey has been developed as part of this ongoing work to prioritise Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the organisation and the industry.

Alix Macfarlane, LGcomms executive committee, initiated the drive for EDI to become an LGcomms priority commitment. Alix said, “I would ask everyone working in local public sector comms to complete this survey.  It will only take a few minutes of your time and you will be helping, in a very real way, to shape the future of our profession.

“It is very important for communications teams in the public sector to represent the communities they serve.  It is also important that our profession is populated by and led by people from diverse backgrounds and with different life experiences.

“Armed with a clear picture of the state of diversity and inclusion in our profession, and working with under-represented groups and comms leaders, we can develop resources and initiatives to support our membership and the wider sector to improve diversity and inclusion in our profession.”

The survey should take around 6 minutes to complete. Every completed survey will be entered into a prize draw to win a £50 high street shopping voucher.

The survey is open for responses until midnight on 31 July 2022.  It is open to anyone working in local public sector communications, including local councils, police, NHS, fire and rescue services and national park authorities.
